Sam Middleton Man of the Match 06.08.2021

Aberaeron secured a 4th consecutive win at Cae’r Lli on Friday night with a tough 2-1 victory over Tregaron Turfs in the ER Jenkins Cup.
Aberaeron began the half with the wind against them, which made the game into quite a scrappy affair, with no team producing any clear-cut chances. Sam Middleton however made Tregaron pay for their mistake when their left back’s pass back to goalkeeper Matt Toy didn’t quite have enough power behind it. Sam intercepted the pass and calmly slotted passed keeper Toy to put Aberaeron 1-0 ahead. Tregaron did however have one finely struck shot exquisitely saved by home goalkeeper Casey Walters to keep it 1-0 going into the break.

The second half was end-to-end, but like the first half, not too many chances were created by either team. And like the first half, Aberaeron’s second goal came from another wayward Tregaron pass. Sam Middleton was again the scorer, managing to score after going on his own against 2 Tregaron defenders. He managed to find the far-left corner of the goal with a low shot from just outside the box to put the home team 2-0 up. Aberaeron looked fairly comfortable with their lead up until the last few minutes where they dropped off and allowed Tregaron to retain possession and attack the home goal. With the referee’s stopwatch hitting the 90 minute mark, Tregaron pulled a goal back to ensure a tense injury time period. William Williams the scorer, managing to score through a packed box. Ugly scenes followed with a player from both sides seeing red after a scuffle after the goal had gone in. Aberaeron however weathered the storm in the 7 minutes of injury time that followed to ensure the seasiders remain unbeaten this season so far.

Aberaeron’s next game will again be at home in the JD Welsh Cup 1st Round when they welcome Ynyshir Albion from the Rhondda Valley on Saturday the 14th of August. Progression to the second round, which see’s the Cymru Premier teams join the cup, could see a David vs Goliath tie as teams are seeded to ensure some big ties for smaller teams. Aberaeron then welcome Tregaron again at home in the league the following Wednesday, in which will be the 6th home tie in a row for the club.
